Unlocking research potential: webinar for GPs
A second webinar for GP practices and hospices will be held on Tuesday 20 October 2026 to explore in detail how the South West Secure Date Environment (SDE) simplifies information governance to make it easier and safer for practices to take part in research.

GPs, hospice directors, and Primary Care Network (PCN) leads are at the forefront of patient care. The SDE programme has been designed to allow them to safely harness health data to improve local outcomes, without adding to their administrative burden.
Safeguarding patient data is a top priority. To ensure that practices and hospices have all the information they need about the SDE, we have recently launched a series of collaborative webinars focusing on Information Governance (IG) and Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs).
In this second session, the SDE will walk through the IG framework step-by-step and answer questions. The South West Secure Data Environment (SDE) also offers practices in the region funding to enable them to contribute patient data for approved research through their secure platform.
The South West SDE can make the process of data sharing simpler and safer in the following ways:
Security and privacy: The SDE fundamentally changes how data is handled. Approved researchers can only access the data they need within a highly secure, monitored environment. Patient anonymity is strictly protected.
Zero additional administrative burden: Managing individual data extraction requests is time-consuming. By signing up to the SDE, data access for approved, life-saving research is managed centrally, freeing up time to focus on front-line care.
Actionable population health insights: By safely linking primary care and hospice data with broader regional datasets, the SDE helps generate a clearer picture of local health inequalities and trends. This enables PCNs and hospices to plan resources more efficiently and target care where it is needed most.
Ensuring patients are represented: By participating, the unique demographics of local communities are included in national health research. This allows medical innovations, treatments and clinical trials to be more effective for specific populations.
The webinar will take place on Tuesday 20 October, 12.30-1.30pm.
